I'm a lefty born on the 13th

Today is both National Left-Hander’s Day and Friday the 13th.

Today is also my birthday and I’m left-handed … so it’s my special day!

Being left-handed in a right-handed world has its challenges: My first grade teacher tried to make me write with my right hand, so I wrote everything backwards. I deal cards backwards. I have to force myself to shake hands with my right hand. It took years for me to find a handheld can opener I could comfortably use. Making checkmarks felt awkward until I realized I could make them backwards. Three ring binders and spiral notebooks are clumsy to use. I preferred the cane poles I fished with as a child because I didn’t have to reel my fish in with my right hand. The keypad on my keyboard is on the right side. I’ve never enjoyed miniature golf because I couldn’t figure out how to hold the club. The pour spout on a ladle is usually upside down to me. But I’m not complaining.

And then there’s the dreaded number 13, linked to all things evil.

Well, I’ve always considered 13 to be my lucky number and I celebrate my left-handedness. So now I think I’ll go have myself a happy birthday!
