Old Hundred

Thomas Chapel is located in the little town of Hundred, West Virginia. My husband's roots run deep there. The town is named for his ancestor, Henry Church.

This little church can be found in the hills of West Virginia ... Wetzel County to be specific. It didn't dawn on me when we started our trip that the cemeteries wouldn't be on flat land. We got plenty of exercise that week seeking out family graves.

Shiloh Baptist Church

Another frequent stop when we travel to Greene County, Georgia. Two baby girls from my family tree are buried at this church which I believe is located near Penfield.

Churches and roots

Since Easter is next weekend, this week I'd like to share pictures of country churches I've visited while doing family research. I'll start with one near and dear to my heart ... Bairds Baptist Church, constituted June 24, 1802, in Bairdstown, Oglethorpe County, Georgia. I remember going to homecomings with my family as a young girl.

My grandparents, an aunt, and uncles are buried there so I've walked the cemetery many times with Daddy. He used to tell me "we're related to most everybody in this cemetery." I've since proven that to be true as three of the four siblings of my fourth great-grandfather are buried there, along with their families.

Happy birthday Daddy!

Just called Daddy to wish him a happy birthday. He's having a good day so I'm happy. Here are two more embrodierd items he made some time ago. The top one is Tara. All that's missing is Scarlet running down the driveway. The bottom one is just a cabin scene.

Daddy

Tomorrow is Daddy's birthday so I'll write a little about him tonight ... third of eight, father of five, retired plumber, gardner, claims to remember all the way back to three years old, will talk to anyone, hates all Democrats, and used to do embroidery to wind down at night. He gave these to me years ago. The carriage is a dresser scarf and the peacock a pillowcase. Sorry about the wrinkles.

I took my mother and sister to Washington National Cathedral a year or two ago. It's a beautiful place.

American Goldfinch

Not much going on so today's post will be of one of my favorite visitors. I have the feeder hanging in a bush right beside the window so as long as I don't make a lot of movement, I can get a pretty good close up.

Manassas history

A couple of weeks ago I discovered the Mayfield Civil War Fort site here in Manassas. I was running errands and didn't have time to stop but made a mental note to do so later. Last night on the way to buy some pansies, we stopped by the site and headed up the hill. We had a nice walk and learned a little history.







If you know me you know I enjoy walking cemeteries so it was a pleasant surprise to find this family cemetery.

One by one

My daffodils are finally beginning to bloom ... one by one. I found these on the side of the house this morning.

As far as I can tell, this is a Downy Woodpecker. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me. We caught him enjoying the suet outside our front window one morning last year.

I'm waiting for my daffodils to bloom but they seem to be taking their time. So instead I'm posting this sunflower photo from last year. Same color. These always draw a lot of goldfinch to my yard.

I spent yesterday afternoon at a birthday party for my great-niece. It was held at a fun house with all kinds of slides and moon bounces. My youngest son has loved Batman all of his life so I couldn't resist taking a picture of this particular moon bounce.

I came home from work one day last month and noticed a weird glow in the backyard. There must have been a front passing through the next county over and this is what it looked like. The sky in the front yard was normal.

Field trip (part 2)

The reason for my field trip yesterday was to go to Union Station. I've only been there once before and had forgotten how nice the outside was.

I got to go on a field trip with my boss today. It was a beautiful day and nice to get out of the office.

We took a weekend trip to New York last December. It was great fun. Strawberry Fields in Central Park was one of our stops.
